"From the time she could walk and talk, all she wanted to do was sing and dance." -MomSoprano Madison Emery Smith has always been musically inspired. Growing up in San Francisco, California she received intense performing arts training starting at age five and continuing all the way through high school. She went on to earn a BM in Voice Performance from The Boston Conservatory and an MM in Voice Performance from San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Madison has studied voice with Evelyn Mandac, Sara Goldstein, Barbara Bonney and Wendy Hillhouse (her current teacher) and coached extensively with Karl Paulnack, Sanford Sylvan and Sheri Greenawald. In addition to her training, she has participated in masterclasses with some of the worlds top performers including Martin Katz, Lisa Saffer, Christine Brandes, Dawn Upshaw, and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. In 2009, Madison received first place prizes at both the Pacific Musical Society and the San Francisco NATS Singing Festival (including the Kathryn Harvey Award). That same summer she made her European debut singing Sandmann and Taumann in Hänsel und Gretel with the Arosa Musik Theater in Arosa, Switzerland. Most recently, she has been seen as Marie in Daughter of the Regiment, Königin der Nacht in Die Zauberflöte, Rowena in Riddle Me (world premier), and Nannetta in Falstaff and continues to earn accolades for her singing including: Semi-finalist in the Loren L. Zachary Competition; Regional Finalist in the NATS Artist Award Competition; and Thelma Dry Award at the Henry and Maria Holt Scholarship Competition. In addition to the stage, Madison maintains a busy concert schedule singing repertoire ranging from Händel's Messiah and Orff's Carmina Burana to world premiers by contemporary American composers from around the country. This summer she will be a guest performer at the Glier Institute in Kiev, Ukraine and participate as a Fellow in the CoOPERAtive Program at Westminster College.
